Synthesis, structure, and properties of high‐impact polystyrene/octavinyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane nanocomposites

Abstract: The organic–inorganic hybrid nanocomposites from high‐impact polystyrene/octavinyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (HIPS/POSS) containing various percentages of POSS were prepared by free radical polymerization and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H‐NMR, thermal gravity analysis (TGA), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The octavinyl POSS has formed covalent bond connected PS‐POSS hybrid with polystyrene. POSS can well disperse in the comp… Show more

“…HIPS is the rubber reinforced polystyrene plastic, which exhibits significantly enhanced impact strength compared to pure polystyrene. There are two phases in HIPS: polystyrene as continuous phase and rubber as dispersed phase . This two‐phases texture structure of HIPS is called salami or core‐shell structure .…”

“…This two‐phases texture structure of HIPS is called salami or core‐shell structure . It is usually synthesized by bulk radical polymerization in which the rubber is added at the beginning of the polymerization . Why is the salami morphology so important?…”

“…The absorption peaks at 1600, 1500, and 1450 cm −1 are characteristics of the benzene ring. The absorption bands at 752 and 693 cm −1 provide information that there exists a single‐substituted benzene ring . The most notable distinction between the two spectra is that the absorption band at 3400 cm −1 in the spectrum of water‐eroded composite disappears after water erosion.…”

“…In the same way, the absorption peaks at 1604 cm -1 and 1496 cm -1 were assigned to the aromatic C=C stretching vibrations. Compared to pure polystyrene, high-impact polysterene (as a rubber-reinformed polystyrene plastic) had enhanced strength properties due to the addition of polybutadiene (the most common rubber used), which formed graft copolymers with polystyrene [28]. The presence of polybutadiene can be demonstrated by different absorption peaks.…”
