Structure D 2000Jahn-Teller Phase Transition in Cu0.50TiO(PO4): Powder Structural Characterization of the β-Variety and Thermal Study. -The new title compound is synthesized from a stoichiometric mixture of CuO, TiO2, and (NH4)H2PO4 (250°C for 18 h, followed by several thermal treatments at 200-950°C) and from aqueous solutions of Cu(NO3)2, (NH4)H2PO4, and diluted TiCl4 in EtOH (evaporation of the solvent, followed by heating between 250 and 950°C). The samples are characterized by XRD and DSC. The compound undergoes an α to β phase transition with hysteresis. Powder XRD reveals that the β-phase crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c with Z = 4. Its structure can be described as a TiOPO4 framework formed by chains of titled corner-sharing [TiO6] octahedra cross-linked by [PO4] tetrahedra. The [CuO6] octahedra exhibit a typical Jahn-Teller distorted coordination with four short equatorial Cu-O bonds, and two longer apical Cu-O bonds. The α-phase has a similar structure type and crystallizes in the same space group P21/c. -(GRAVEREAU*, P.; BENMOKHTAR, S.; CHAMINADE, J.-P.; EL JAZOULI, A.; LEBRAUD, E.; DENUX, D.; Solid State Sci. 9 (2007) 3-4, 258-266; Inst.
