Silicon carbide (SiC) power devices are attracting significant attention due to their outstanding stability in high‐voltage, high‐temperature, and high‐frequency environments. To replace toxic Pb‐based glass, there is an urgent need to develop Pb‐free glass for SiC power device encapsulation, considering its superior electrical insulation properties and processing capabilities. Here, we developed a Bi‐based glass for effective encapsulation practical of SiC power devices. By increasing the content of glass modifier BaO, the structure of bismuth borate glass can be tuned to reduce glass network density, leading to the transition of structural units from [BO4] to [BO3]. The softened temperature is reduced to 363.4°C with the BaO content increasing to 15 mol%. After encapsulating the SiC power devices using Bi‐based glass, the glass demonstrated a reverse breakdown voltage of 650 V and an extremely low leakage current. Therefore, our work provided a route for adapting Pb‐free‐based low‐melting glass for encapsulating SiC devices and offered potential for advanced semiconductor packaging.

Various glass compositions were prepared in a glassy system [25BaCO 3-(10-x) ZrO 2-20TiO 2-45SiO 2-xCrO 3 ] (x = 0, 2, 4, and 6) using melt-quenching technique. XRD patterns of glass and glass ceramics showed amorphous and crystalline nature. Density of glass and glass ceramics decreased from 3.4553 to 3.4381 g/cm 3 and 3.7485 to 3.1977 g/cm 3 with increasing concentration of CrO 3. DTA of the glasses revealed a shift in base line which suggests a change in specific heat and attributed to the glass transition temperature, T g. FTIR and Raman spectroscopic analysis indicated that an increasing doping of CrO 3 changes structural network by increasing number of nonbridging oxygens (NBO) within glassy matrix. These results revealed that bands toward low frequency side endorsed to the vibration of Ba 2+ metal cation, bending vibration of Si-O-Si and bonding formation of ZrO 2. Concentration of CrO 3, changed the microsture significantly and hence, a denser, fully developed mixed morphology was noticed with spherical grains of ZrO 2 , irregular shape of bazirite (BaZr 0.97 Ti 0.03 Si 3 O 9) phase and TiO 2 grains. Glass ceramic sample BZTS6C971 CrO 3 (x = 6) retains high value of dielectric constant, ~4555 due to space charge polarization. Hence, these glass ceramics might be useful for diverse applications such as in optical devices, electronic circuits, and multilayer ceramic capacitors.

Zinc borosilicate glass with optimized chemical composition was synthesized and doped with 5 wt % α-Fe2O3. XRD, 57Fe Mössbauer, FT-IR, UV/Vis/NIR and FE SEM were used as the characterization methods. XRD showed the amorphous nature of the samples synthesized. 57Fe Mössbauer spectra confirmed the superposition of Fe3+ in tetrahedral and Fe2+ in octahedral positions. FT-IR spectra showed general features characteristic of different borosilicate glasses. The NIR band at 1116 nm in the UV/Vis/NIR spectrum was assigned to the Fe2+ transition, whereas the Fe3+ transition bands could not be assigned due to the overlapping of several spectral bands of different origin in the UV region centered at 282 nm and the Vis region between 415 to 496 nm. Zinc borosilicate glass as synthesized can be considered as a possible matrix in the immobilization of nonradioactive as well as radioactive wastes.
