Synthesis, Structural Characterization, and Magnetic Properties of the Heteroleptic Dinuclear Nickel Selenite Complex [{Ni(TMEDA)SeO3}2]

Abstract: The reaction of Ni(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O with Na 2 SeO 3 in the presence of tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) in a water/ ethanol mixture yielded the heteroleptic complex [{Ni(TMEDA)SeO 3 } 2 ] (1). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis showed that complex 1 consists of a dinuclear species in which the two nickel atoms are held together by two bridging selenito anions. The crystal packing of 1 is determined by networks of hydrogen bonds, involving cocrystal-

“…The title compound was isolated from a dichloromethane solution as a by product of the reaction between of Ph 3 SnCl with [Ph 3 P=N=PPh 3 ] + HSeO 3in dichloromethane solvent. The hydrogen selenite salt, prepared in the framework of our research activity on selenite compounds (Delferro et al, 2010, Delferro et al, 2011, contained a significant amount of [Ph 3 P=N=PPh 3 ] + Cl -, which is responsible of the formation of the title compound.…”

“…The bridging properties of selenites for connecting to transition metal cations allow magnetic exchange between paramagnetic centers in oligonuclear transition metal selenite complexes [1]. Recently, the weakly coordinative capability of the Se(IV) electron lone pair has been found to give rise to supramolecular interactions, as observed for the polyoxoselenitepalladate anions [Pd 15 (µ 3 -SeO 3 ) 10 (µ 3 -O) 10 Na] 9− in the solid state [2].…”
