Synthesis, Spectral and Theoretical Studies of Macrocyclic Cu(II), Ni(II) and Co(II) Complexes by Template Reaction of Malonic Acid with Metal (II) Chloride and Urea or Thiourea

Abstract: Six new macrocyclic complexes were synthesized by template reaction of urea or thiourea with malonic acid and metal (II) chloride. The metal to ligand ratio of the complexes was found to be (1:1). The Co(II) and the Ni(II) complexes are proposed to be square planar and Cu(II) complexes are proposed to be octahedral geometry. Macrocyclic complexes are (1:2) electrolytes for Cu(II) and Ni(II) complexes while Co(II) complexes are non-electrolytic nature as shown by their molar conductivities (Λ M ) in DMSO (Dimet… Show more

“…[ν(C=O)], amide II [ν(C-N) + δ (N-H)], amide III [ δ (N-H), and amide IV wagging [Θ (C=O)] vibrations respectively which confirmed the closed cyclic products are present. 26 The complexes [Co(N 4 MacL 1 )Cl 2 ]-[Co(N 6 MacL 3 )Cl 2 ] showed a minor negative value in the (NH) band in the area 3215-3235 cm −1 when compared to their ligands, which is well in keeping with the coordinated N-H stretching vibration. 27 This is further supported by the possibility of assigning the (M-Cl) and (M-N) vibrations to all complexes' bands in the range of 330-336 cm -1 and 480-490 cm -1 , respectively.…”

“…Macrocyclic metal complexes are of great importance due to their resemblance with many natural system antibacterial activity, such as porphyrins and cobalamines, and their use in DNA recognition oxidation and cleavage (Arockiadoss and Amaladason, 2012). The synthesis and characterization of coordination compounds with macrocyclic ligand have evolved during the last years as one of the main research areas in coordination chemistry (Al Obaidi and Al Hiti, 2012). There has been a spectacular growth in interest in metal complexes with the tetraazamacrocyclic ligands, followed by an extensive work on the metal-controlled template synthesis of the macrocyclic species (Herlinger et al, 1994).…”
