Synthesis routes of CeO2 nanoparticles dedicated to organophosphorus degradation: a benchmark

Abstract: Exposure to nerve agents, in military conflicts or terrorist acts, requires efficient decontamination systems. CeO2 nanoparticles appear efficient against organophosphorus compounds, thus we performed a benchmark on the available synthesis routes.

“…Nanosecond LAL (ns-LAL) has been shown to achieve similar power-specific ablation rates as picosecond LAL (ps-LAL) 14 . However, in the ns-LAL literature, mostly 10 ns lasers are employed while only a few publications, for instance 15,16 , investigated the lower pulse duration limit (~ 0.6 ns) that cavity-length limited, Q-switched lasers deliver.…”

“…In terms of synthesis routes, several physical/chemical processes have been reported for the preparation of CeO 2 nanoparticles (NPs), such as sol–gel, precipitation, ball milling, hydrothermal decomposition, thermal decomposition, pyrolysis and hydrolysis among others 29 , 30 . Worth mentioning the simple and surfactant-free sonochemical pathway used to prepared pure and copper (Cu)-doped (4 and 40 wt%) CeO 2 nanostructures for hydrogen storage purposes, with the 4 wt% sample depicting a discharge capacity of 5070 mAh/g at 22nd cycle 31 , as well as the facile and eco-friendly route used to prepare Pr 2 Ce 2 O 7 nanostructures from banana extract 32 and the use of grape juice as a novel and green fuel to obtain cobalt ferrite nanocomposites 33 However, none of them enables the preparation of highly crystalline nanostructured materials with low temperature and reaction times (100 °C, 8 min) 34 like the microwave-assisted hydrothermal (MAH) synthesis.…”

“…In the case of CeO 2 , its application potential for degradation of organophosphorus compounds and manufacturing costs were evaluated for various synthesis methods, including direct photochemical synthesis in a large scale. 30 In this study, we describe a facile, rapid and effective photochemical method, which has a great potential for producing nanocrystalline materials from aqueous solutions in an industrial scale. We also evaluate a long term operational experience running a demonstration pilot plant for photochemical syntheses of nanocrystalline materials, which incorporates readily available and cost-efficient lowpressure mercury discharges as the irradiation source.…”
