Synthesis of ZIF-68 Membrane on a ZnO Modified α-Alumina Support by a Modified Reactive Seeding Method

Abstract: Large-pore ZIF-68 membranes offer adsorption-based selectivity for separation of gas mixtures or molecular sieving characteristics for the separation of large liquid molecules. ZIF-68 membranes can be grown on ZnO modified α-alumina supports by a modified reactive seeding method. The resultant membranes were around 40 μm in thickness and were determined to have limited nonselective defects given their adherence to Knudsen diffusion during single gas permeation measurements. Further pervaporation experiments sh… Show more

“…These relationships suggest that the fabricated AFI membrane contains a negligible amount of microporous defects and the gas transport mechanism is Knudsen diffusion. The gas permeance values of the AFI membrane are comparable to those of the ZIF-68 membrane which has a similar pore size (7.5 Å) and straight 1D channels [33] after normalizing with the membrane thickness. Fig.…”

“…Zeolite films on substrate can be fabricated using in situ synthesis and secondary growth with hydrothermal treatment. Many recent publications show that the secondary growth method favors high reproducibility and good control over the membrane structure [18,21].…”

“…Although reviews have already been published in the concept of solvent recovery, they are focused on the general aspects [4,16,17,18,19]. The study conducted by Yao et al [16] has highlighted the synthesis of Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) membranes, thin film formation and their application as pervaporation membranes for dehydration (till the year 2014).…”

“…In addition, the reactive seeds can also be prepared by the conversion of metal source for MOF modified on the surface of substrates. For example, the ZnO can be laid down to substrates via dip-coating [102], in situ deposition [102], manual-rubbing [98], etc. Thereafter, ZnO reacted with ligands to form MOF seeds on the surface of the substrate.…”
