Synthesis of YB2C2 by high‐energy ball milling and reactive spark plasma sintering

Abstract: X-ray pure yttrium diborodicarbide (YB 2 C 2) was synthesized for the first time via modified spark plasma sintering (SPS) using Y 2 O 3 , B 4 C, and carbon as starting materials. Homogeneous intermixing of the raw powder by high energy ball milling (HEBM) promoted the formation of YB 2 C 2 powder with layered structure by boro/ carbo-thermal reduction. The average particle size of the synthesized powder at an optimum synthesis temperature (1625℃) was 568 nm. Small amount of YB 2 C was formed by consuming YB 4… Show more

“…Rare-earth diborodicarbides (REB 2 C 2 , RE = Sc, Y, and lanthanide elements), which were first developed by Post et al [14] in 1956, are a new group of ternary layered structure materials, similar to MAX phases (where M is an early transition metal, A is the IIIA, IVA, VA, or VIA group elements, and X is carbon (C) or nitrogen) [15]. YB 2 C 2 is a typical compound of the REB 2 C 2 family, which has been widely investigated [16][17][18][19]. The crystal structure of YB 2 C 2 was reported as the tetragon with two types of a space group of P4 2 /mmc (No.…”
