Synthesis of water‐reducible acrylic–alkyd resins based on modified palm oil

Abstract: Water-reducible acrylic-alkyd resins were synthesized from the reaction between monoglycerides prepared from modified palm oil and carboxy-functional acrylic copolymer followed by neutralization of carboxyl groups with diethanolamine. Modified palm oil was produced by interesterification of palm oil with tung oil at a weight ratio of 1 : 1, using sodium hydroxide as a catalyst, whereas carboxy-functional acrylic copolymer was prepared by radical copolymerization of n-butyl methacrylate and maleic anhydride. “…Saravari et al 12 have prepared maleic anhydride and n-butyl methacrylate copolymer-modified palm oil-based waterborne alkyd with improved water, acid, and alkali resistance using the chemical resistance method. Dhoke et al synthesized anticorrosive coating material using commercial alkyd and characterized their anticorrosive performance by salt mist and chemical resistance method.…”

“…These latters (the VOCs) are toxic, responsible for global warming and climate changes, and photochemical ozone layer deterioration [1] . Some alternatives have been adopted to obtain ecofriendly materials were, among others, waterborne coatings and hyperbranched polymers with high solid content are being developed for this purposes [1][2][3][4][5][6] .…”

“…One approach to alleviate the shortcoming of each component and create a highly performing class of waterborne binders is to combine these two polymers in a hybrid system consisting of a chemical blend of acrylic-alkyd dispersions [10,11]. The chemical hybridization of acrylic and alkyd structures is expected to provide the advantages of acrylic polymers such as hardness, gloss, weatherability and chemical resistance, and also the advantages of alkyds such as good adhesion, high gloss and good penetration.…”
