Synthesis of TiO2 films on glass slides by the sol-gel method and their photocatalytic activity

Abstract: Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) films with rod-like and sphere-like TiO 2 particles were prepared on glass slides employing the sol-gel method. The shape and size of TiO 2 particles were controlled using different concentrations of sodium dodecylbenzensulfonate (SDBS). By increasing the mole ratio of SDBS, the shape of TiO 2 particles transformed from rod-like to sphere-like. Also, the size of TiO 2 particles became gradually smaller. Then, the size became bigger when an excess amount of SDBS was added. The films we… Show more

“…1d. One strong peak at 530.5 eV has emerged for the unannealed a-TiO X lm, which corresponds to O atoms in titanium oxide, 35 and the spectrum shows a shoulder at higher binding energies. The shoulder is due to the hydroxyl (OH) functional group on the a-TiO X lm surface.…”

“…This would help improve the photocatalytic activity and potential application of the titania nanoparticles. Furthermore, to avoid the aggregation and posttreatment challenges, TiO 2 can also be assembled onto different substrates and fabricated into different types of titania thin films [150,211,214,[234][235][236][237]. The advantage of using thin films is that they are known to be chemically stable and possess a high dielectric constant, a high refractive index, and excellent transmittance; therefore they have the ability to retain the photocatalytic activity of the assembled catalysts [236].…”

“…These substrates are then aged and calcined at elevated temperatures to produce the thin films [185,287]. The solgel method has been widely used in the synthesis of titania thin films because it is a simple and cost-effective method that results in the formation of high porosity, low density and low refractive index, high nanoparticle homogeneity, tunable particle size, and high substrate coating [185,227,234,[288][289][290]. The pH of the sol, the ageing time, amount of surfactant template, amount of hydrolysis retardant, and calcination temperature play an important role in the quality of the thin films produced [288].…”

“…These technical challenges have led to more research activities on the fabrication of different types of titania thin films [6,8,9,[30][31][32][33]. Generally, thin films are known to be chemically stable and possess a high dielectric constant, a high refractive index, and excellent transmittance [9].…”
