Synthesis of thymyl esters and their insecticidal activity against Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Abstract: BACKGROUND Thymol, a natural phenolic monoterpene originating from Thymus vulgaris, is recognized as a safe and potent botanical insecticide to many insects. The structural modification of thymol into thymyl esters is a potential approach for the development of novel insecticides, which showed more toxicity than thymol. However, there are no reports on the insecticidal activity of thymyl esters to control Spodoptera litura. RESULTS Thymol was structurally modified into ten thymyl esters by esterification using… Show more

“…After 48 h, recording the number of lethal larvae, and determining toxicity by testing samples of LD 50 and LD 90 using a probit analysis with SPSS (version 19.0), Toosendanin (a commercialized pesticide) was prepared for positive control and blank control specimens were fed with leaf discs treated with acetone alone. The bioassay was replicated three times for every treatment 1 …”

“…1, the structure of these compounds was confirmed by 1 H NMR, 13 Tables 1 and 2, comparison of the 13 C-NMR data of compound 1 with PSE showed that all the signals were very similar, except the lack of two methoxy carbon signal. 15,31 In addition, the 1 After that, the selective 1D-TOCSY identified five sugar residues as one 2-O-acetyl-⊎-digitalopyranose unit, two ⊎-canaropyranose units, one ⊎-digitoxopyranose unit and one ⊎-cymaropyranose unit. During our experiments, each anomeric proton signal was irradiated selectively by 1D-TOCSY and the subspectrum of each sugar residue was generated by each doublet methyl resonance from the coupling constants obtained in each sugar unit in Fig.…”
