“…Dictyostelium cells form their initial contacts through interactions of a plasma membraneassociated Ca 2+ -dependent cadherin-like protein known as gp24 (DdCAD-1) (Yang et al, 1997). In early development this CAM is transported from the cytosol to the external surface of the plasma membrane and a small fraction of this CAM is released into the extracellular milieu.…”

“…Dd-CAD-1 is a Ca 2+ -dependent cell adhesion molecule (Wong et al, 1996). Interestingly, growth conditions have a significant effect on the expression of Dd-CAD-1 (Yang et al, 1997). In addition, the three discoidin I genes are particularly well characterised as markers of the growth-development transition (under the hybridisation conditions used, the probe probably recognises the transcripts of all three discoidin 1 genes, so we will assume we are analysing their composite behaviour).…”

“…To investigate how DdCAD-1 might be involved in cell sorting during development, cadA cDNA was fused to GFP and the fusion construct was ligated to the endogenous cadA promoter -631 (Yang et al, 1997) (see Fig. S3A in the supplementary material) for transfection into cadA -cells.…”

“…Mutations in these genes have major effects on aggregate formation and morphogenesis (Coates and Harwood, 2001;Siu et al, 2004). The Ca 2+ -dependent cell-cell contact sites are mediated by the adhesion molecule DdCAD-1 (also known previously as gp24), which is encoded by the cadA gene and expressed soon after the initiation of development (Brar and Siu, 1993;Wong et al, 1996;Wong et al, 2002;Yang et al, 1997). The Ca 2+ /Mg 2+ -independent contact sites are mediated by csA (gp80) (Harris and Siu, 2002;Kamboj et al, 1989;Siu et al, 1985;Stein and Gerisch, 1996) and TgrC1 (LagC, gp150) (Dynes et al, 1994;Gao et al, 1992;Wang et al, 2000), and they contribute to the formation of stable cell-cell adhesion during the aggregation phase and the post-aggregation phase, respectively.…”
