A simple one-pot hydrothermal method was successfully used to synthesize p-n heterojunction Mn 3 O 4 /BiVO 4 composites with different contents of BiVO 4 . The experimental results show that the as-prepared p-n heterojunction Mn 3 O 4 / BiVO 4 composite exhibited higher visible light photocatalytic activity for the degradation of model dye methylene blue than the pure BiVO 4 and Mn 3 O 4 crystal under irradiation of 5 W white LED lamp. The enhanced photocatalytic efficiency is due to a large number of p-n heterojunctions in Mn 3 O 4 / BiVO 4 composites, which effectively reduces the recombination of the electrons and holes by charge transfer from n-type BiVO 4 to p-type Mn 3 O 4 crystals. The prepared p-n heterojunction Mn 3 O 4 /BiVO 4 composite was functionalized with cobalt, zinc, copper, and tin complexes of porphyrin. The energy diagrams of these prepared compounds were calculated via the electrochemical investigations and the electron transfer mechanism was discussed in details. The photocatalytic efficiency of the functionalized nanocomposites enhances significantly compared to the p-n heterojunction Mn 3 O 4 / BiVO 4 under visible light irradiation. Between the prepared compounds, BiVO 4 /Mn 3 O 4 -CoTCPP shows higher photocatalytic activity. This compound can destruct 98% of dye pollutant in 180 min under irradiation of 5 W white LED lamp. Furthermore, this photocatalyst shows proper stability after four cycle degradation test.

We investigated electrochemical sensors based on graphite oxide (GrO) and oxidized carbon black (CbO). GrO and CbO were synthesized by the modified Hummers method. Single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) probes were synthesized with a 5′ primary amine for attachment. These ssDNA oligonucleotides were immobilized on GrO and CbO using standard 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) coupling. This formed an amide bond between the DNA-amine and carboxyl groups on GrO and CbO. GrO and CbO were used instead of graphite in a carbon paste material. This significantly enhanced the sensitivity of the biosensor for the reverse-complementary DNA. We detected reverse-complimentary DNA using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) in a ferricyanide solution. The solution was spiked with the ssDNA oligonucleotide with the reverse-complementary sequence of the immobilized probe. The change in current or impedance was measured. We present early work on optimizing the fabrication method for DNA-functionalized carbon electrodes. Working electrodes were fabricated by drop-casting the active material onto a glassy carbon electrode surface.

Synthesis of Graphene oxide/Porphyrin Nanocomposite for Photocatalytic Degradation of Crystal Violet Dye

A novel nanocomposite was synthesized by covalent functionalization of graphene oxide (GO) with 5,10,15,20‐tetrakis(4‐hydroxyphenyl)porphyrinatoiron (III) chloride (Fe−THPP) via an ester linkage. The synthesized nanocomposite was characterized by various techniques such as XPS, Raman spectroscopy, BET, IR, UV‐Visible, TGA, SEM, and EDX. The synthesized nanocomposite exhibited appreciable interaction with crystal violet (CV) dye with a detection limit of 2.6×10−6 μg/mL and binding constant of 35.93×103 ppm−1 which ensured the high concentration of CV dye on the surface of synthesized photocatalyst. The nanocomposite was effectively utilized in the photo‐degradation of CV dye under visible light irradiation. The photo‐degradation efficiency was remarkably high (93.45 %) with a low catalytic dosage of 0.4 mg/L within 80 minutes. The nanocomposite exhibited good stability and reusability and thereby can be used in the photocatalytic degradation processes to treat wastewater.
