Aminocaproic acid (ACA) mixed methanolic lead acetate-thiourea (PbAc-TU) complex as precursor for fabrication of lead sulphide (PbS) nanoparticles (NPs) has been explained. The size, structure and morphology of as-prepared ACAcapped PbS NPs were systematically characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Uv-vis spectroscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) techniques. The obtained results show that the synthesized PbS NPs are nanocrystalline, size quantized and their agglomeration shows a mesoporous network of 8.7 nm in pore size. The binding nature of ACA molecules on PbS surface was studied by thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron (XPS) techniques. Results indicate that ACA acts as a soft template that restricts the growth of PbS NPs through its binding to Pb surface via nitrogen lone pair.

Abstract:Colloidal lead sulfide is a versatile material with great opportunities to tune the bandgap by electronic confinement and to adapt the optical and electrical properties to the target application. We present a new and simple synthetic route to control size and shape of PbS nanoparticles. Increasing concentrations of explicitly added acetic acid are used to tune the shape of PbS nanoparticles from quasi-spherical particles via octahedrons to six-armed stars. The presence of acetate changes the intrinsic surface energies of the different crystal facets and enables the growth along the ⟨100⟩ direction. Furthermore, the presence of 1,2-dichloroethane alters the reaction kinetics, which results in smaller nanoparticles with a narrower size distribution.

PbO nanofibers were fabricated by calcination of the electrospun PVP/Pb (NO 3 ) 2 composite nanofibers. For the first time, PbS nanofibers and PbSe nanofibers were successfully synthesized by double-crucible sulfurization and selenidation methods using PbO nanofibers as precursors, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis shows PbS nanofibers and PbSe nanofibers are respectively pure cubic phase with space group of Fm-3 m. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation indicates that the diameter of PbS nanofibers and PbSe nanofibers are 295.52 ± 25.43 and 265.31 ± 21.90 nm under the 95 % confidence level, respectively. The photocatalytic activities of samples were studied by using rhodamine B (Rh B) as degradation agent. When PbS or PbSe nanofibers are employed as the photocatalysts, the respective degradation rates of Rh B solution under the ultraviolet light irradiation after 220 min irradiation are 70.79 and 73.17 %. This preparation technique could be applied to prepare other metal chalcogenides nanofibers. The photocatalytic mechanism and formation process of PbS and PbSe nanofibers are also provided.
