To efficiently utilize the catalyst active sites and simultaneously enhance target hydrocarbon selectivity in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS), herein, we demonstrate a promising Co-Al 2 O 3 hollow-sphere catalyst prepared by a two-pot route including hydrothermal carbonization and wet impregnation. Benefiting by plentiful mesopores on the shell, reactants could access the cavity inside and the active sites on the inner surface for further FTS reaction. Compared with conventional solid catalyst, the hollow structure provided a "buffer-pot" effect, where feed gas and preliminary product from the shell could mix completely at a low flow rate. Heavy hydrocarbons were further confined, leading to enhanced formation of lighter C 5 -C 11 components, which more readily escaped out through the mesoporous shell, which thus played a "filter" role. Additionally, increased acidity on the shell generated more isoparaffins and olefins in the final product. This concept displayed a great superiority in improving active metal activity and selective production from multiple products compared with conventional supported catalysts.

The electrophoretic movement of colloidal silica particles with hollow interior and nanoporous shell structure was examined under a homogeneous direct current (DC) electric field as a function of field strengths (50150 V) and solution pHs (410). The electrophoretic behavior was compared with that of solid silica particles of similar size. In an acidic solution (pH~4) at which the solution pH near the PZC (pH~2), mobility of the hollow particles appeared to be insensitive to the change of applied voltage in a dilute solids concentration. As pH moved away from the PZC to a basic solution (pH~10), velocity of the charged particles increased pronouncedly and the velocity was in a linear proportion with the DC field strength, suggesting that the particles were moved by electrophoresis. The hollow silica particles yet showed a much slower electrophoretic velocity, less than one half, than that of the solid counterparts at the alkaline situation (pH~10). This lagged motion was due presumably to the rough outer surface and the permeable shell structure (pore radius~20 nm), both contributing to the hydrodynamic friction that retards the electrophoretic movement.

A method for the synthesis of hollow lanthanide doped yttrium oxyfluoride (YOF) spheres in the micrometer size range with cubic structure based on the pyrolysis at 600ºC of liquid aerosols generated from aqueous solutions containing the corresponding rare earth chlorides and trifluoroacetic acid has been developed. This procedure, which has been used for the first time for the synthesis of YFO based materials, is simpler and advantageous when compared with other methods usually employed for the production of hollow spheres since it does not require the use of sacrificial templates. In addition, it is continuous, which is desirable because of practical reasons. The procedure is also suitable for doping the YOF spheres with europium cations resulting in down converting red phosphors when activated with UV light, or for co-doping with both Er
