Synthesis of self‐matting waterborne polyurethane coatings with excellent transmittance

Abstract: The effect of structural factors, including the type of diisocyanates and glycols, degree of crosslinking, hard-segment content, crystallinity and hydrophilic group content, on optical properties of waterborne polyurethane (WPU) was investigated. Based on the relationship between structure and properties, a series of self-matting WPUs with excellent transmittance were synthesized. Results demonstrated that refractive index of constituent groups was an important factor to influence the optical properties of coa… Show more

“…DLS results (Table 4) show that the size of micelles decreases as the chain extender, DMBA, becomes more hydrophilic. 39 The anion that is provided by DMBA is necessary to stabilize the micelles in water. With smaller micelle size, the surface area of micelles is larger, and lower the charge on each micelles.…”

“…In general, these emulsion particles with a greatly wider particle diameter distribution developed mechanical instability during the film formation process, thus yielding a micro-rough film surface. When the incident light was cast on this rough polymer film, most incident light experienced absorption, refraction, and multiple reflections and little reflected light was received, leading to a low gloss effect of the acrylic film [ 24 , 25 ].…”

“…3 Note that conventional coatings, such as pristine EP or PU, are not effective at this harsh environment. 4,5 The development of an efficient erosion/wear coating requires comprehensive knowledge about the major mechanisms of failures. In fact, wear resistance is not an inherent property of materials 6 and varies against several parameters including test conditions, field properties, reinforcement type and content, the bond type between matrix and reinforcements, expansion ratio and cell size.…”
