Synthesis of selenolate-protected Au18(SeC6H5)14 nanoclusters

Abstract: This work reports the first synthesis of selenophenolate-protected Au(18)(SePh)(14) nanoclusters. This cluster exhibits distinct differences from its thiolate analogue in terms of optical absorption properties. The Au(18)(SePh)(14) nanoclusters were obtained via a controlled reaction of Au(25)(SCH(2)CH(2)Ph)(18) with selenophenol. Electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ESI-TOF-MS) revealed the crude product to contain predominantly Au(18)(SePh)(14) nanoclusters, and side products include Au(… Show more

“…[4] Zhu and co-workers reported selenophenolateprotected Au 25 and Au 18 NCs,which possess different optical properties from those of the Au n (SR) m counterparts. [5] Studies on the atomically precise Au 24 (SeR) 20 and Au 24 (SR) 20 revealed largely different structures and optical properties. [6] These reports raise al egitimate question concerning nanoparticle stability and related properties on the silver NCs stabilized by selenolate ligands in comparison with their thiolate counterparts.T hough there are several reported mixed-valent silver clusters containing Ag 0 , [3b,c, 7] thiolateprotected homoleptic silver NCs characterized by singlecrystal X-ray diffraction are scarce (Ag 20 ,Ag 21, Ag 25 ,Ag 44 ).…”

“…[1][2][3] Recent works have discussed the great probability of making new stable functional nanomaterials by replacing the thiolate ligands on the gold surface with selenolates.Negishi et al first reported adirect synthesis of Au 25 (SeC 8 H 17 ) 18 À from the gold salt as well as the preparation of Au 38 (SeC 12 H 25 ) 24 by ligand exchange on Au 38 -(SR) 24 . “…The researchers have done a lot of improvements of the properties of AuNCs, especially AuNCs with different ligands. In general, the ligands for AuNCs include thiolate , phosphines and selenates , etc. Many studies have demonstrated that ligands play a key role in the structure and properties of AuNCs.…”
