Synthesis of Repair Materials and Methods for Reinforced Concrete and Prestressed Bridge Girders

Abstract: Bridge structures nationwide across the United States are aging and in need of repair or, in some cases, full replacement. Repair decisions are common among bridge owners because of the economic feasibility when compared to the higher cost of full replacement of damaged or deteriorated bridge components such as girders. Using a proper repair approach, as a long-term or just a short-term solution, can lead to benefits that could not be achieved otherwise such as considerable savings in both time and cost. “…The used polypropylene fibre by-products of recycling plastic packaging in concrete compared with plain concrete have been discussed in detail in a previous study [ 44 ]. Glass cullet may be used as a replacement for cement or aggregate [ 45 , 46 , 47 , 48 ], while he pozzolanic reactivity of glass powder with particle size below 100 μm is observed as an increase in compressive strength [ 49 , 50 , 51 ]. The impact of glass powder as a cement replacement on concrete or geopolymer properties was presented in [ 52 , 53 , 54 , 55 , 56 ].…”

“…In 2005, Dall Asta and Zona studied the external prestressed composite beam and deformation connector, established a nonlinear finite element model according to the test, and compared the calculation results with the test results [ 2 ]. Other researchers conducted theoretical and experimental research on this structural form for many times [ 3 5 ]. In 2021, Zhou and Wang [ 6 ] and others studied the influence of prestress on the stress distribution characteristics of flexural section of composite beam.…”

“…In the case of bridges on road networks, the SRA (Slovak Road Administration) statistics database and available sources show that about 34.2% of existing bridges do not satisfy the current criteria for reliability and 2.5% are in very poor/breakdown condition [ 9 ]. This is an urgent problem because the ageing transport infrastructure in most European countries and the United States of America is more than 50 to 60 years old and requires rehabilitation based on objective evaluations [ 10 , 11 ].…”
