Synthesis of renewable aviation fuel additives with aromatic aldehydes and methyl isobutyl ketone under solvent-free conditions

Abstract: High-density and low freezing point dicycloalkanes were synthesized by the aldol condensation of methyl isobutyl ketone with aromatic aldehydes followed by hydrodeoxygenation under solvent-free conditions.

“…Zhang’s group discovered that this hydrogenation-driven ring constitution tactic was potent, not solely for aromatic entities bearing -OCH 3 or -OH groups but also for aromatic substances encompassing carbonyl groups. Cyclohexanone (or MIBK , ) was first used for aldol condensation reaction with methylbenzaldehyde.…”

Cyclohexanone (or MIBK , ) was first used for aldol condensation reaction with methylbenzaldehyde. The aldol condensation product as obtained was hydrocyclized under the catalysis of Pd/C (or Ru/C, Pt/C) to obtain high-density polycycloalkanes (Figure f, g).…”

“…Aldol condensation is currently used to synthesize fine chemicals [5,23,24], and it holds a promising potential for development of sustainable aviation fuels [25][26][27][28] and bio-based monomers [29,30]. In addition, it is a suitable reaction for probing the acid-base character of catalysts as only the accessible, i.e., catalytically active basic sites can be reached by the reactants in both mixed oxides and reconstructed hydrotalcites.…”
