Synthesis of pyridinium polysiloxane for antibacterial coating in supercritical carbon dioxide

Abstract: Antibacterial polysiloxane with pyridinium pendants was synthesized through hydrosilylation reaction of trimethylsiloxane terminated (45% methylhydrosiloxane)–dimethylsiloxane random copolymer and 4‐vinylpyridine and subsequent N‐alkylation of pyridine ring with 1‐bromohexane. The pyridinium polysiloxane was coated on cotton and formed a 35 nm layer via a novel method of deposition in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) for biocidal application. The coated fabrics provided effective antibacterial activities a… Show more

“…Mineral phases of precipitates at various Mg/Ca ratios and the weight percent were analyzed using MDI Jade (Version 6.5, MDI Materials Data, Inc., Livermore, CA, USA) and Material Studio software (Version 8.0, Accelrys, San Diego, CA, USA). The morphologies and elemental composition of precipitates were analyzed using SEM (S4800, Hitachi, Tokyo, Japan) [39][40][41][42][43][44][45] and EDS (EDAX XM2-60S, Hitachi, Tokyo, Japan). The precipitates were also analyzed with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR, Nicolet 380, Thermol Electron Corporation, Waltham, MA, USA) [46][47][48] in the 4000-500 cm −1 wavenumber range.…”

“…It is known that the thickness and mass content of the CuS layer are important to the electrically conductive and antibacterial properties . The thickness of CuS coating was estimated to be about 108 nm by the following formula: h=d|m1m0ρPAN4m0ρCuS where h is the thickness of the CuS layer, d is the average diameter of PAN fiber (12.7 μm), m 0 and m 1 are the mass (g) of PAN fibers before and after CuS coated, respectively, ρ PAN and ρ CuS are densities of PAN fibers (1.18 g/cm 3 ) and CuS (4.60 g/cm 3 ), respectively.…”

“…The growth and proliferation of bacteria on materials cause many problems including the degradation of the materials, generation of stain and odor, and detriment of the health of human beings . Functionalization of materials with biocidal compounds for antibacterial ability is constantly required and hence becomes a research area of great interest …”
