Synthesis of Pt–Ni Alloy Nanocrystals with High‐Index Facets and Enhanced Electrocatalytic Properties

Abstract: The shape-controlled synthesis of multicomponent metal nanocrystals (NCs) bounded by high-index facets (HIFs) is of significant importance in the design and synthesis of high-activity catalysts. We report herein the preparation of Pt-Ni alloy NCs by tuning their shape from concave-nanocubic (CNC) to nanocubic and hexoctahedral (HOH). Owing to the synergy of the HIFs and the electronic effect of the Pt-Ni alloy, the as-prepared CNC and HOH Pt-Ni alloy NCs exhibited excellent catalytic properties for the electro… Show more

“…It has become clear that the high density of active sites of atomic steps, edges, and kinks on the surface of high-index facets are especially important for catalysis process 27 28 29 . For example, the oxidation current density on hexoctahedral and concave cubic Pt-Ni alloy nanocrystals with respectively exposed {h k l} and {hk0} high-index facets was almost 2.5 and 2.7 times higher than that observed for Pt black, and 3.6 and 3.9 times that of Pt/C in the electrooxidation of methanol, respectively 30 . The calculated initial activities of concave PtNi 3 were respectively 7.9 and 10.5-times higher than those observed using octahedral PtNi 3 and Pt 3 Ni 31 .…”

“…Effective and sustainable electrocatalysts can reduce the over-potential, expedite the reaction, and maintain the stability, all of which can largely boost the energy conversion efficiency. Traditional Pt/Ru-based alloys in acidic solution have been used as alternatives to more active and CO tolerant electrocatalysts 1 . However, the CO tolerance and activity is still insufficient for commercialization.…”

“…That's indeed the reason that more and more attention has been focused on the synthesis of nano-structures with high index surfaces. 29,30 Table 1 lists the diffraction peak intensities of freshly prepared CdS and Pt-Ni 3 /CdS photocatalyst particles. It's clearly seen that aer Pt-Ni 3 NP loading, the peak intensities of the high index facets, (002), (101), (102) and (103), of CdS sample are signicantly decreased.…”
