Synthesis of Polypyrrole Using Ammonium Peroxy Disulfate (APS) as Oxidant Together with Some Dopants for Use in Gas Sensors

Abstract: Polypyrrole (Ppy) was synthesized using Ammonium Peroxy Disulfate (APS) as oxidant in a standard ratio of monomer to oxidants at 5℃. Attempts were made to increase the electrical conductivity by using various dopants viz. Lithium per Chlorate (LiClO4), para-Toluene Sulfonate (p-TS) and Napthalene Sulfonic acid (NSA). The materials were characterized using FTIR, X Ray diffraction and SEM. The electrical conductivity was measured by two probe method and was found to be in the range of 10&l… Show more

“…FTIR spectra of pure PPy shows main characteristic peak at 649 cm −1 which corresponds to ring deformation, peak at 1047 cm −1 refers C-H in plane bend and peak at 1198 cm −1 corresponds to ring breathing, The band at 1178 cm −1 may be assigned for N C stretching band, the peak at 1365 cm −1 is due to fundamental vibrations of polypyrrole ring, the peaks at 1556.8 cm −1 and 1489.4 cm −1 attributes to C C stretching, the occurrence of small peak at 3438 cm −1 is assigned to the presence of N-H stretching frequencies. The peaks observed in the present work match well with the previous studies [18]. In addition to these peaks two peaks are noticed at 739 cm −1 and 916 cm −1 in nanocomposites which are assigned to C-H out-of-plane deformation and O-H bend respectively.…”

“…The pure polymer and the hybrids with a low concentration of the conducting filler exhibit low electrical conductivity (see Figure ) which is characteristic for polypyrrole in its undoped state ,. Upon the further addition of the filler, a significant change in the conductivity occurs.…”
