Synthesis of novel polycarbonate‐based thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers compatibilizers with octadecyl side chains and their application in PC/PP blends

Abstract: With the aim to improve the compatibility of polycarbonate (PC)/polypropylene (PP) blends, a novel aromatic polycarbonate diol (PCDL) was synthesized by the transesterification reaction, then a series of polycarbonate‐based thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers compatibilizers (TPU‐Gx) with octadecyl side chains were successfully prepared by introducing different content of PCDL and glyceryl monostearate (2,3‐Dihydroxypropyl octadecenoate; GMS). The structures of synthesized products were confirmed by Fourier … Show more

“…The FT-IR spectrum of sample was taken on a Fourier Notes: For better understanding the formulation and the further discussion, abbreviations are used as follows: matrix resin-g-compatibilizer, indicating the matrix resin was grafted by compatibilizer; the number after compatibilizer is the content of compatibilizer. For example, GMA 5.0, indicating the PC/PP (65/30) alloy grafted by PPM-g-GMA (5). The mass fraction of compatibilizer in formulation can be calculated by function as follows: Mass fraction ¼ Compatibilizer content 95þCompatibilizer content :…”

“…In the previous study, numerous modifications including reactive and additive compatibilization, have been introduced to further improve the properties of mobility, overcome its internal stress and also reduce the material cost. [3][4][5][6] It makes it possible for PC/PP alloy whose dielectric constant is relative low, applied in communication field. Compatibilizer plays an important role in preparing polymer alloy with high comprehensive performances, 7,8 and the technology of intruding the third phase to improve the compatibility of PC and PP has been widely studied.…”

“…Adding a compatibilizer is the most common approach [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ]. Compatibilizers typically include block or graft polymers, or compatibilizers with the same, or miscible, monomer units as the blend components [ 11 , 12 , 13 ]. Block copolymers can reduce the phase separation behavior, and may exhibit a homogeneous or microphase separation morphology, becoming commonly used compatibilizers [ 14 , 15 , 16 ].…”
