Synthesis of nickel and cobalt sulfide nanoparticles using a low cost sonochemical method

Abstract: Nickel and cobalt sulfides are promising materials in different cutting-edge research areas like solar cells, supercapacitors, catalysts, and electrode materials. Nickel and cobalt sulfides with various stoichiometries have been synthesized sonochemically from Ni(CH3COO)2 ∙ 4H2O, Co(CH3COO)2 ∙ 2H2O and different sulfur precursors using a direct immersion ultrasonic probe. The products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) including EDX analysis, IR and UV–Vis sp… Show more

“…S3b and S3d). Those results demonstrate that the laser irradiation method can be 12 used to synthesize a variety of transition metal sulfides. It is reasonable to speculate that their formation mechanisms would also be the same as those discussed for the NiS.…”

“…To synthesize the nanostructured TMSs, many techniques have been developed, for example, wet-chemistry process [3], anionic exchange process [4], chemical bath deposition [5], hydro/solvothermal reactions [6], thermal sulfurization [7], microwave irradiation [8], atomic layer deposition [9], spray pyrolysis [10], electrodeposition [11], and sonochemical method [12]. In addition to the aforementioned methods, exploiting laser irradiation as an alternative to acquire the nanostructured TMSs was recently reported as a unique one-step process [13].…”

“…Due to the rapid release of sulfur, the particles tend to form large aggregates and blocks in the aqueous solution of sodium sulfide. To maintain a 1:1 ratio of Cu to S in the reaction medium, we selected TU and TAA to act both as a slower sulfur release source and a Cu complexing agent . The structural properties of obtained CEs were then related to the device performance.…”

“…This method avoids the tedious multi-step hydrothermal treatment and solvothermal anion-exchange commonly used in previous studies [50]. In the literature, nickel sulfides and cobalt sulfides have also been prepared by using thioacetamide as sulfur source [51]. Major diffraction peaks could be readily indexed to Co9S8 crystallites with a face-centered cubic structure and a space group of Fm-3m(225) [52][53][54].…”
