Synthesis of Mesoporous Carbon‐Bonded TiC/SiC Composites by Direct Carbothermal Reduction of Sol–Gel Derived Monolithic Precursor

Abstract: Mesosporous carbon‐bonded titanium‐carbide/silicon‐carbide (C‐TiC/SiC) ceramics with a high specific surface area (221 m2/g), ultra fine grains (10–50 nm), and high crystallinity were synthesized from direct carbothermal reduction (1100°–1450°C) of monolithic Ti–Si–O–C precursors made from controlled sol–gel process. The nano‐sized carbide grains are bonded into bulk materials by poly(furfuryl alcohol) (PFA) derived nanocrystalline carbon framework by “bridge,” “entanglement,” and “adhesive” effects. “…) can be considered a dense material, with interparticle carbons. Gas sorption can resolve the pores from PFA‐derived carbon because they are still in micropore–mesopore range after surfactant burn out at 550°C . Heat treatment results in gradual consumption of interparticle carbon or ordering of carbon between the oxides.…”

“…To achieve the desired fiber products, it was important to formulate the starting sol‐gel compositions with the desired carbon content and with suitable viscosity for FS. The carbon content in the solutions was controlled via FA, due to its ability to polymerize to polyfurfuryl alcohol (PFA) and upon heat treatments hold ceramic grains in a carbon network . This pyrolysis heat treatment was undertaken at 550°C in N 2 , which converted the PFA to carbon at a designed ratio.…”

“…27 The grain size was not uniform for samples with a low C/Ti ratio. A bi-model distribution of grains existed, where some grains remained in a nano scale and some were coarsened to several microns ( Fig.…”

“…The Ti-O-C precursor is a sol-gel mixture of titanium alkoxide and furfuryl alcohol (FA), which is as the carbon source. [18][19][20] In the present work, novel graphene/TiC composites featuring uniformly distributed graphene sheets and fine TiC grains (the grain size was less than 100 nm) were synthesized. This composite material showed improved toughness and generous energy absorption upon (lowvelocity) impact.…”
