Synthesis of magnesium silicon nitride nanopowder by employing two-step method

Abstract: In this work, a new method for the preparation of magnesium silicon nitride (MgSiN 2 ) nanopowder was studied using a two-step process in nitrogen gas from Mg/Si starting mixtures. This method is known as mechanical alloying followed by heat treatment. The results showed that the compositions of the combustion products depended on the starting mixtures. In addition, the content of magnesium and silicon in the starting powder should fulfil the condition Mg/Si ¼ 2 to obtain single phase MgSiN 2 .Single phase MgS… Show more

“…oxides such as silica or magnesium oxide is not trivial and the material is very prone to oxidation. 7,11,12 In the presence of O 2 , Mg 2 Si decomposes to form MgO and Si. So far, there have been only few reports on tailoring of the morphology of Mg 2 Si by nanostructuring or the introduction of porosity, although nanoscopic and porous structures promise improved performances or even completely new properties, such as drastically reduced thermal conductivities.…”

“…While when the Mg microparticles were heated in N 2 , the N atom content reached 25.54%, which could be attributed to the dissolution of the N atom into the liquid Mg. It is possible that the reaction between Mg vapor and N 2 was trigged, i.e., 3Mg (g) + N 2 (g) → Mg 3 N 2 (s) [28]. In air, the weight percentage of Mg in residues was 69.97%, that of O element is 27.73%, and those of the elements N and C are tiny.…”

“…Khajelakzay et al [9] prepared MgSiN 2 nanopowders by mechanical alloying and heat treatment in two steps, using Mg/Si as starting mixtures and adding a small amount of stearic acid. Yang et al [29] synthesized single-phase MgSiN 2 powders starting from Mg/Si 3 N 4 by combustion synthesis, followed by acid washing.…”
