Synthesis of Magnesium Oxide Nanoparticles by Sol-Gel Process

Abstract: Cubic shaped Magnesium oxide nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by sol-gel method using magnesium nitrate and sodium hydroxide at room temperature. Hydrated Magnesium oxide nanoparticles were annealed in air at 300 and 500°C. X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that the obtain nanoparticles are in good crystallinity, pure magnesium oxide periclase phase with (200) orientation. Morphological investigation by FESEM reveals that the typical sizes of the grown nanoparticles are in the range of 50-70nm. Po… Show more

“…In the case of nanoparticles, it can be observed that the similarity between wavelength vibrations around 3400 cm −1 , which represents the presence of the hydroxyl group (OH) in the samples, is perhaps due to water adsorption . Also, vibrations around 1600 cm −1 correspond to CO 2 and humidity . Particularly for Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles, the band between 830 cm −1 and 400 cm −1 represents AlOAl bond vibration .…”

“…Alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) nanoparticles were supplied by Petroraza S.A.S (Sabaneta, Colombia). Magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles were synthesized through the sol–gel process using magnesium nitrate (MgNO 3 ·6H 2 O, 99%, Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany) as the precursor. Chromium oxide (Cr 2 O 3 ) nanoparticles were synthesized by the electrochemical method in the presence of potassium dichromate (99.5%, Fisher Scientific, Fair Lawn, NJ) and sulfuric acid (95–97%, Merck KGaA).…”

“…The MgO has good additive properties in heavy fuel oil because of high oil dispersion ability and large specific surface area and also bactericidal performance in the aqueous environments due to the formation of super oxide [6,7]. There are various techniques which are used to synthesize the MgO nanostructures by using methods such as precipitation [8], solvothermal [9], chemical vapour deposition [10], electrochemical [11], sonochemical [12], microwave [13], pulse laser deposition [14], laser ablation [15], sol-gel method [16] and carbothermic reduction [17].…”
