The absorption maximum of the orange‐colored copper(II) complex of the cyclam derivative L, which has two 3,7‐diazabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane units (see picture), occurs at 390 nm. This is the lowest value for a copper(II) tetraamine known so far, and indicates an extremely strong ligand field. This maximum is shifted by 110 nm (5740 cm−1, 68 kJ mol−1) to lower wavelengths than that of the parent compound [Cu(cyclam)]2+; cyclam=1,4,8,11‐tetraazacyclotetradecane.

Cobalt(II), nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes are synthesized with 1,3,7,9-tetraaza-4,6,10,12-tetraphenyl-2,8-dithiacyclododecane, a tetradentate ligand (L) and characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance measurements, magnetic susceptibitity measurements, mass, i.r., electronic and e.p.r. spectral studies. All the complexes are non-electrolytes so they may be formulated as [M(L)X 2 ] [where, M = Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) and X = Cl ) and NO 3 ) ]. All the complexes are of high spin type. On the basis of i.r., electronic and e.p.r. spectral studies an octahedral geometry has been assigned for Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes and tetragonal geometry for Cu(II) complexes. The antimicrobial activities of the ligand and its complexes, as growth inhibiting agents, have been screened in vitro against two different species of bacteria and plant pathogenic fungi.

Recent contributions to the chemistry of macrocyclic metal complexes and ligands are reviewed. The compounds reviewed have the following structural features: aza-macrocycles having 1,10-phenanthroline and 2,2 0 -bipyridine groups and pendants arms; highly aromatic azamacrocycles with phthalocyanine and porphyrin units incorporating pendant arms; aliphatic aza-macrocycles with pendant arms and/or polynucleating aza-macrocycles. Several of their chemical properties are critically reviewed but the emphasis is on structural and synthetic details.
