Synthesis of mackinawite FeS thin films from acidic chemical baths

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe growth of monophasic iron sulfide thin films onto glass substrates has been achieved by chemical bath deposition at acidic values of pH. Powder X-ray diffraction (p-XRD) confirms the deposition of tetragonal FeS (mackinawite) with preferred orientation along (001) plane. The crystallite size estimated by Scherrer equation was found to be 14 nm. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows the formation of nanoflakes as base layer and nanoflowers as top layer. Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analys… Show more

“…The XRD pattern of the amorphous iron sulfide material obtained herein is qualitative similar to those reported by Akhtar et al., [36] and Csákberényi‐Malasics, et al., [37] except for the position of the 001 peak, possibly indicating different hydration levels between layers, [34] (see simulation Figure 4).…”

“…While this range in spacing estimate was fairly large, the sheet-like nature of mackinawite allows for significant variability in the (001) spacing, which can hold intercalated species and can also relax over time. The fast Fourier transform (FFT) of Figure b,c confirmed the lattice spacing for the (001) plane while also showing a spacing of 3.4 Å in Figure b and 2.9 Å in Figure c corresponding to the (220) plane of greigite and (101) plane of mackinawite, respectively. The observed sheetlike morphology was consistent with literature descriptions of flake-like particles of mackinawite. , The rhombohedral morphology of siderite was also consistently evident, but the siderite particles were not electron-transparent.…”

“…1-Ketonic carbonyl bands with a center at 1697 cm -1 were the bands identified for the ketoprofen ligand, as opposed to carboxyl carbonyl bands with a center at 1654 cm -1 [29] and v(OH) bands with a center at 3429 cm -1 . FTIR spectroscopy proved that the metal ions were coordinated.…”
