Synthesis of Hydrophobic Ionic Liquids for Electrochemical Applications

Abstract: In this work is described an improved synthesis of hydrophobic room-temperature ionic liquids ͑RTIL͒ composed of N-methyl-N-alkylpyrrolidinium ͑or piperidinium͒ cations and ͑perfluoroalkylsulfonyl͒imide, ͓͑C n F 2n+1 SO 2 ͒͑C m F 2m+1 SO 2 ͒N − ͔, anions. The procedure described allows the synthesis of hydrophobic ionic liquids with the purity required for electrochemical applications such as high-voltage supercapacitors and lithium batteries. This new synthesis does not require the use of environmentally unfr… Show more

“…The Fc/Fc + (Snook et al, 2006) standard redox potential is taken as E°(Fc/Fc + ) = 0.45V vs. SHE whatever the solvent used. From Figure 13, the standard potential of Fc/Fc + system is 330 mV vs. the Ag/AgCl (P 14 -TFSI) , KCl (P 14 -TFSI), reference electrode, leading to a potential of 120 mV vs. SHE or 3.14 V vs. Li/Li + which agrees well with 3.1 V elsewhere determined (Appetecchi et al, 2006). “…As expected from the sizes FAP − > TFSI − > PF 6 − , there is a clear trend that the capacitance in the anodic regime decreases in the order PF 6 − > TFSI − > FAP − . For the imidazolium-based ILs, the differential capacitance in the cathodic range decreases in the order [ [53,54]. The FAP − ILs were dried for several hours under vacuum (10 −3 mbar) at 100 • C by the Endres group in Clausthal and sent to Marburg in sealed sample containers.…”
