“…This synthesis can effectively enhance the fluorescent effect of AuNCs with a fairly long reaction time. According to the first template-assisted techniques, a series of templates such as polymers [35,52], proteins [53,54], dendrimers [55], and DNA [56,57] have been investigated for the synthetic method of AuNCs. Compared with other synthetic techniques, template-protected techniques use mild reductant in the presence of strong stabilizer.…”

“…This striking work is not only a novel method for creating highly fluorescent AuNCs, but a promising protocol can be used for the other proteins and noble metals. Following to this report, many groups studied this "green" synthetic route with other bioactive proteins such as insulin [68][69][70], lysozyme [71], transferrin [72], and egg white proteins [53]. Chou et al have firstly selected insulin as the template for synthesizing the fluorescent AuNCs.…”

“…Due to their molecule-like behavior including discrete electronic states and size-dependent fluorescence, which have been extensively applications in various fields including analysis [19,20], sensing [21] and bio-imaging [22,23]. So far, extensive studies have concentrated on the synthesis of luminescent gold and silver nanoclusters, using various kinds of templates or stabilizing agents such as thiols [24,25], peptides [26], proteins [27,28], DNA [29] and polymers [30]. In contrast to Au and Ag, Cu is extremely cheap, common and widely used in daily life, but its use in preparation of CuNCs is rare [31].…”

“…In the present work, a cheap and easily obtained chicken egg white (CEW) was selected as a template for the synthesis of fluorescent gold nanoclusters. 35,36 By studying the interaction between the as-prepared chicken egg white stabilized gold nanoclusters (CEW-Au NCs) and environmental metal ions, we found that mercury and copper could effectively quench the fluorescence of CEW-Au NCs. Considering that mercury is a widely presented environmental metal pollution, we introduced an ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) masking method to exclude the interference of copper ion in mercury ion detection.…”
