Synthesis of gold nanoparticles in a biocompatible fluid from sputtering deposition onto castor oil

Abstract: The sputtering of Au targets onto castor oil generates stable spherical gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) of 2.4 to 3.8 nm. The AuNP size increases with the discharge voltage and the mechanism of nucleation and growth are related to the energy of the atoms/clusters ejected from the target.

“…Green synthesis of chalcogenides nanomaterials using castor oil and its isolate ricinoleic acid as eco-friendly bio-based capping agents have recently been reported [73][74][75][76][77][78][79]. This is environmentally interesting because the use of castor oil and ricinoleic acid as both capping and dispersing agents, eliminate the need for the use of air-sensitive, toxic and expensive chemicals such as trioctylphosphine (TOP), trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) and alkyl amines.…”

“…In fact, recent reports suggest that NPs nucleate and grow on the IL surfaces, 16 as also observed for sputtering onto castor oil. 17 Thus, the chemical configuration of the IL surface and the energy of the sputtered atoms must play crucial roles in the formation of NPs.…”

“…Wender et al used castor oil, a biocompatible lowvolatile fluid that is composed mainly of a mixture of triglycerides predominantly derived from unsaturated and hydroxylated fatty acids, as a liquid sputtering medium for Au NP synthesis [33]. Sputter deposition of the Au target at 330 V for 300 s yielded Au NPs with diameters of 3.6 ± 1.0 nm.…”

“…First, metal NP synthesis using ionic liquids will be discussed, which includes the synthesis of single material NPs and the effect of sputtering conditions [19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27], various alloying strategies [15,23,24,28], and techniques for transferring synthesized NPs [29][30][31]. Subsequently, we discuss NP synthesis using low-volatile polymers, including the use of thiol compounds and transfer techniques [32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39]. Finally, potential applications of liquid medium sputtered NPs, such as their use as ORR electrocatalysts and Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reacScheme.…”
