Synthesis of Gold Nano- and Microplates in Hexagonal Liquid Crystals

Abstract: Single-crystalline gold nano- and microplates with triangular or hexagonal shapes are synthesized by reduction of HAuCl(4) in lyotropic liquid crystal (LLC) mainly made of poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) block copolymers and water after adding a small amount of capping agents, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) or tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB). During the growth of such plates, capping agents play the crucial role. It is found that there is an optimal value of CTAB or TBA… Show more

“…An alternative mechanism proposed by Wang et al arises from the initial spontaneous self-assembly of particles along a particular crystallographic orientation. This is followed by other Au particles coalescing at the planar interface, which effectively reduces their surface energy and contributes to the growth of the particle along this particular orientation [40]. In this study, analysis of the XRD data clearly indicates the dominance of the (111) orientation and confirms preferential particle growth along (111) crystal plane.…”

“…Subsequently, they extended their research to obtain products of controllable shape and size [105]. Single-crystalline Au nano-and micro-plates with triangular or hexagonal shapes were synthesized by reducing HAuCl 4 in LLC with the addition of a small amount of capping agents.…”

“…In spite of the availability of a number of methods [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][12][13][14][15] , the mechanism of formation of such structures remains elusive. Mechanisms based on preferential adsorption of surfactants 8,16 , oriented attachment 16 , soft templates 17,18 , aggregation of spherical particles 4 and kinetic control [6][7][8]18,19 have been proposed in the literature but do not satisfactorily explain the shape control. Here, we show for the first time that this problem can be analysed based on classical crystal growth concepts.…”
