Synthesis of Fluorescent Gold Nanoclusters Directed by Bovine Serum Albumin and Application for Nitrite Detection

Abstract: In the present work, gold nanocluster (GNC) induced by bovine serum albumin (BSA) was synthesized as a novel fluorescence probe to detect nitrite (NO2(-)) sensitively and selectively. The fluorescence of GNC was found to be quenched effectively by NO2(-). Under the optimum conditions, it was found that the change of fluorescence intensity was proportional with the concentration of NO2(-) in the linear range of 0.1-50 μM (R = 0.9990), with a detection limit (S/N = 3) of 30 nM. The absorption spectroscopy, circu… Show more

“…Yue et al detected nitrite in the same linear range and a LOD of 30 nM. 35 However, the study on interference due to Hg 2+ is lacking, which is essential for real water sample analysis, because Hg 2+ can quench the uores-cence of BSA-Au NCs by metallophilic Hg 2+ -Au + interaction. Also, CN À can quench the uorescence in higher pH by cyanide etching-induced uorescence quenching of gold nanoclusters.…”

“…1,3 Due to their ultra small size, excellent luminescence properties, and stable structures, Au NCs have attracted significant attention in the past decade. [2][3][4][5] Chen et al 6 determined the enzyme activity by assessing the change in emission intensity of fluorescent Au NCs, Qiao et al 7 reported that ovalbumin-protected Au NCs with folic acid can be used for HeLa cells imaging, and Yue et al 8 synthesized bovine serum albumin-capped Au NCs as a fluorescence probe to determine nitrite (NO 2 -) sensitively and selectively. Inorganic nanoparticles are difficult to biodegrade and induce long-term toxicity, which hinders their application in clinical practice.…”

“…Figure 4b showed that the dip bands at 208 and 222 nm were ascribed to the characteristic signal of BSA. 28 It could be found from Fig. 4b that the addition of NO solution resulted in an obvious change for the peak intensity and a slight red shift, which suggested that the NO might damage the structure of BSA.…”
