Synthesis of ferrate using NaOCl and Fe(OH)3 from electrolysis of used iron, and its application for metanil yellow degradation

Abstract: Synthesis of ferrate using NaOCl and Fe(OH)3 from electrolysis of used iron, and its application for metanil yellow degradation had been done. The electrolysis was conducted using used iron and zink plates at anode and cathode electrodes, respectively, Na2SO4 electrolyte. The dissolved iron ion from the electrolysis then was made alkaline using NaOH pellet and NaOCl was soaked to the solution to form ferrate (FeO4 2-). The ferrate was used for metanil yellow degradation and it was compared wi… Show more

“…The ferrate powder was analyzed by XRD at 2-theta (2θ) between 20.00 -60.00 ° with a CuK radiation diffractometer. The results in Figure 2 show the presence of an isomorphic ferrate crystal structure as confirmed by the literature of Gunawan et al [20] and Munyengabe et al [40]. Sharp peaks of Na2FeO4 salt crystals were observed to appear at 27.27, 30.05, 35.14, 39.36, 40.51, 45.35 and 54.30 °.…”

“…The test results for electrolyzed ferrate powder composition are shown in Figure 3. Most of the element iron (Fe) was found in its oxide form (Na2FeO4) as some of the previous studies [19][20][21]. Other compositions such as Sodium (Na) were also found in the remaining NaOH electrolyte ions used.…”

“…21 Ferrate can be synthesized by three methods: wet chemical, thermal, or electrochemical methods. 8,[22][23][24][25] Among them, electrochemical synthesis has recently attracted more attention because of its simple synthesis method, green process without toxic products, low cost, and especially its capability for online generation at the application site. 6,7,26 In the electrochemical method, ferrate has been commonly synthesized by anodic dissolution of iron or iron alloy in highly alkaline media.…”
