Synthesis of Faujasite from Egyptian Clays: Characterizations and Removal of Heavy Metals

Abstract: Three clay samples with different mineral compositions (kaolinite, smectite-kaoline, and smectite-rich) were used for zeolite synthesis using the method of hydrothermal reactions after fusion with NaOH. The conditions of hydrothermal crystallization (zeolitization) were found to be at temperature of 100˚C, and time span between 72 h and 96 h for kaoline and smectite-rich samples, while 48 h for the smectite-kaolinite sample. The results indicate that zeolites began to crystallize from clay samples after 48 h, … Show more

“…The patterns for the zeolite produced from both kaolinites are similar with one another and with the patterns reported by Moneim and Ahmed, and Wang et al, [18,29]. Both samples show Bragg angles correlated to the formation of zeolite type X as seen in 38-237-ICDD [30] and confirmed by the Structural Commission of the International Zeolite Association [31].…”

“…However, it could be seen from the diffraction patterns that quartz, treated as an impurity, still exists. Recent studies have reported the stability of quartz during hydrothermal synthesis [18,29].…”

“…Asymmetric and symmetric Si-O-Si stretching vibrations due to silica were present at 1034 cm −1 and 809 cm −1 , respectively [ 31 ]. The IR-spectral data of the synthesized zeolite double ring opening vibration 563 cm −1 in the FT-IR spectrum of the synthesized zeolite is near to 566 cm −1 , which is a characteristic to faujasite [ 32 ]. The existence of functional groups Si, Al, and O observed in the spectrum, it was concluded that the formation of Zeolite framework was confirmed by FT-IR.…”
