Synthesis of eugenol-based polybenzoxazine-POSS nanocomposites for low dielectric applications

Abstract: Nanocomposites of eugenol‐based polybenzoxazines/amine containing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) have been prepared through copolymerization of allyl‐containing benzoxazine compounds and amine containing POSS. Their structures, curing behaviour, and thermomechanical properties were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, 1H‐NMR, 13C‐NMR, X‐ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The nanoscale dispersion… Show more

“…The concentration of network chains, or the crosslink density, ( ν c ) is the number of moles of network chains per unit volume of a cured polymer . Crosslink density of highly crosslinked thermosets can be determined by using the equation of state for rubber elasticity which is, νnormalc=E3RT where E ′ is the tensile storage modulus in the rubbery plateau, T is the temperature in Kelvin corresponding to the storage modulus value, and R is the gas constant. The correlating crosslink density for these TA‐hardened epoxy samples was calculated (Table ).…”

“…Less common is the use of more sophisticated synthetic methodologies such as the use of click chemistry to introduce benzoxazine functionality into a POSS reagent, but a model POSS reagent with mixed functionality, allowing the potential for the formation of an A–B copolymer, has been reported . The favourable influence of POSS/PBZ nanocomposites on dielectric behaviour is well established from several studies in this field, but there has been particular emphasis on the production of ultra low k polymers for use as interconnects in semiconductor applications.…”
