Synthesis of cyanoethyl konjac glucomannan and its liquid crystalline behavior in an ionic liquid

Abstract: Cyanoethyl konjac glucomannan (CKGM) products with various degree of substitution (DS) were synthesized, and their chemical structure was characterized by infrared spectroscopy and 1 H and 13 C NMR spectroscopy. Direct evidence of the formation of liquid crystalline phase of cyanoethyl KGM (DS02.10) solution in 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (AMIMCl), a room temperature ionic liquid, was confirmed by using polarized optical microscopy (POM). The mesophase and anisotropic phase of cyanoethyl KGM solutions… Show more

“…KGM hydrolysate was reported to have prebiotic potential for beneficial gut microbiota [153,154]. KGM is a water soluble polysaccharide because of hydrogen bonding in its structure [155,156]. The stronger the hydrogen bonding between their molecules, the harder for it to dissolve in water.…”

“…Konjac glucomannan (KGM), as a high-molecular-weight polysaccharide, has special physical characteristics such as moisture retentivity, thickening, and gelling properties [ 1 ] and bears so many hydroxyl groups that various chemical modifications can be realized on KGM molecular chains [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ]. KGM microspheres based on KGM powder have great application prospects in the fields of separation and purification [ 7 ], cell culture [ 8 ], enzyme and cell immobilization [ 9 ], drug delivery [ 10 ] and controlled release [ 11 ].…”

“…The intrinsic viscosity of native KGM was found to be 1320 mL/g, among the highest of the polysaccharides [9]. The solubility of KGM in water is very poor even though it is a hydrophilic molecule; this feature has been markedly limited the applications of KGM [10,11]. A number of chemical and biologic modifications of KGM were introduced to obtain derivatives with improved solubility properties and/or enhanced capacity to interact with other polymers [11][12][13][14].…”
