Synthesis of Chitosan-Polyvinyl Alcohol Copolymers for Smart Drug Delivery Application

Abstract: Chitosan is a natural polymer obtained from exoskeletons of crustaceans and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a synthetic polymer which has excellent film forming ability along with non-toxic nature. The current work focuses on synthesizing a smart polymer by copolymerization of natural and synthetic polymers and exploring its applications in drug delivery. The copolymers were blended in different ratios and were synthesized using ammonium ceric nitrate as initiator and glutaraldehyde as a crosslinking agent which we… Show more

“…Analysis of the chitosan spectra shows peaks around 3421-3300 cm −1 that represents a strong O H bond and its axial stretch due to the presence of an alcohol group. 42,43 The peak around 2926 cm −1 indicates medium C H stretch in alkanes, and the peak at 1687 cm −1 indicates medium N H stretch bend due to the amine group of chitosan. 42 Peaks around 1442 and 1480 cm −1 indicate the C H stretching of CH 2 and CH 3 groups.…”

“…We evaluated the wound‐healing potential of Cur‐incorporated CS/PVA nanofibers in a combinational composite and their interaction with carbopol/PCL fibers. Recently, CS/PVA electrospun nanofiber was introduced as a suitable drug delivery system . Charernsriwilaiwat et al reported that CS‐EDTA/PVA as biodegradable, biocompatible and antibacterial nanofiber mats can be applied to wounds as dressing materials .…”

“…The structure of PVA was modified with 4‐maleiidohenylisocyanate and its thermal and mechanical properties were tested . Similarly, the structure of PVA was modified with chitosan, rifambin, glycidylmethacrylate, glycoside, N ‐alkyl‐substituted carbamates, 3‐diethylaminopropylamine, succinimide, propargylamine, poly(ɛ‐caprolactone), diethylchlorophosphate, soy bean oil triglycerides, and natural rubber latex for various end user applications. In 2010, Wang and Hsieh modified the structure of PVA with PEG diacrylchloride.…”
