Synthesis of Cellulose-graft-Polychloromethylstyrene-graft-Polyacrylonitrile Terpolymer/Organoclay Bionanocomposite by Metal Catalyzed Living Radical Polymerization and Solvent Blending Method

Abstract: A bionanocomposite of grafted cellulose and organo modified clay was synthesized through solution intercalation method. For this purpose, chloromethylstyrene was grafted onto cellulose using acryloyl chloride and the subsequent free radical polymerization. The synthesized cellulose-graft-poly chloromethylstyrene was used as an atom transfer radical polymerization macroinitiator of acrylonitrile in the presence of CuCl /2, 2'-bipyridine catalyst system, to prepare the cellulose-graft-poly chloromethyl styrenegra… Show more

“…Mentioned methods have been established as useful methods to prepare polymeric materials with complex macromolecular and well‐defined structural. Among them, the RAFT procedure has developed very interesting because of its applicability to various vinyl monomers and its applicability for preparation of block copolymers and homopolymers with controlled molecular weight . Furthermore, by chemical reduction techniques, the synthesized macromolecules via RAFT polymerization method can be produced a thiol group.…”

“…This polymerization approach is divided into three main categories, namely, reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, nitroxide‐mediated polymerization (NMP), and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) . All above‐mentioned polymerization techniques have been developed as powerful tools to synthesize polymeric materials with well‐defined and complex macromolecular architectures with relatively low dispersities . Among these, the RAFT technique has become very attractive owing to its applicability to numerous vinyl monomers, easy experimental setup, and its potential for synthesis of homopolymers, block copolymers, and postmodified polymers with controlled molecular weight, narrow dispersity, and complex macromolecular structures.…”

“…The "grafting from" method is the most commonly used way toward the synthesis of modified Cell using a cellulosic macroinitiator. 25 The free radical polymerization is a conventional, easy, and feasible process, toward the synthesis of various copolymers. However, concurrent formation of homopolymers and copolymers, impossible to control the molecular weight, dispersity, and structure of the resultant copolymer are the main drawbacks of conventional free radical polymerization approach.…”

“…18 20 In this context, the chemical modification of this natural polymer is suggested as an efficient approach for extending the application range. Some synthetic strategies including esterification, 21 etherification, 22 oxidation, 23 silylation, 24 and polymer grafting 25 have been applied for the chemical modification of Cell. Among these techniques, the polymer grafting approach is of particular interest and can be achieved through three major classes as follows:…”
