Synthesis of cationic polyacrylamide by aqueous two‐phase polymerization in poly(ethylene glycol) chloride solution

Abstract: Aqueous two-phase copolymerization of acrylamide(AM) and acryloyloxyethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DAC) was performed in poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) solution and in PEG chloride(Cl-PEG) solution, respectively. Series of cationic polyacrylamide(CPAM) aqueous dispersion were prepared using potassium persulfate (KPS) as initiator. The effect of total amount of monomers, the dosage of initiator, the content of dispersant, the mass ratio of AM to DAC, and the temperature on the conversion, molecular weight, cat… Show more

“…Pure CPAM shows a broad peak of NH stretching at 3407 cm −1 , two characteristic peaks of CONH 2 and CN + at 1676 and 1453 cm −1 , respectively. [ 45 ] HBPE shows a broad peak of OH stretching at 3411 cm −1 and a peak of COO group at 1735 cm −1 . [ 46 ] In comparison, CPAM&HBPE also exhibits these characteristic peaks, but the H‐bonding and CONH 2 peaks show a blueshifted to 3364 and 1660 cm −1 , indicating the formation of intermolecular H‐bonding between the CONH 2 of CPAM and the OH groups of HBPE.…”

“…CPAM was prepared by reverse emulsion copolymerization via the free radical mechanism, with AM:DMC ratio of 1:4 ( Figure 1 ). The protocol of Liu et al was followed, with some modifications [ 32 ]. Each reaction was conducted in a 500 mL, three–necked, round–bottomed flask equipped with a mechanical stirrer, a thermometer, a glass spigot, and a high–purity nitrogen inlet/outlet ( Figure 2 ).…”

“…34 For the preparation of CPAMs, plenty of methods have been developed, and it has been concluded that the aqueous two-phase polymerization (ATPP) has obvious advantages. [35][36][37][38][39][40] It employs no organic solvents, and the product can be directly applied as prepared.…”
