Synthesis of Carbonate Esters by Carboxymethylation Using NaAlO2 as a Highly Active Heterogeneous Catalyst

Abstract: Synthesis of carbonate esters by carboxymethylation using NaAlO2 as a highly active heterogeneous catalyst. ChemRxiv. Preprint. Sodium aluminate is presented as a highly active heterogeneous catalyst able to convert a range of alcohols into the corresponding mixed carbonate esters, in high yield and under green conditions. The reaction is carried out using dimethyl carbonate both as a reactant and solvent, at 90°C. Allylic, aliphatic and aromatic alcohols are converted in good yields. The solid catalyst is sho… Show more

“…It was reported earlier that, CO 2 adsorbed on oxygen ions with the lowest coordination number (monodentate) leads to strong basic sites and bridged bidentate carbonate and chelating bidentate carbonate adsorption can be assigned to moderate or weak basic sites . Sodium aluminate showed three distinct peaks at 1681, 1540 and 1328 cm −1 corresponding three different mode of interaction of CO 2 with sodium aluminate . The oxygen atom of NaAlO 2 can coordinate with CO 2 by monodentate modes ‐ which leads to strong basicity (peak at 1328 cm −1 ).…”

“…[39,40] Sodium aluminate showed three distinct peaks at 1681, 1540 and 1328 cm À 1 corresponding three different mode of interaction of CO 2 with sodium aluminate. [26] The oxygen atom of NaAlO 2 can coordinate with CO 2 by monodentate modeswhich leads to strong basicity (peak at 1328 cm À 1 ). The other two peaks at higher wave numbers corresponding to bridged and chelating mode of coordination, which leads to weak basicity (peaks at 1681 and 1540 cm À 1 ).…”

“…In both Al O Na cases, this materials has a relatively very low specific surface area (~2.0 m 2 .g -1 ). 22 When spray drying the boehmite suspension alone, followed by calcination, the obtained alumina material (here denoted "B") shows high specific surface area (260 m 2 .g -1 , see Table 1). Thus, sodium aluminate was incorporated in the solution before spray drying, targeting a loading of 5, 10 or 20 wt.…”

“…and showed high catalytic performance. [19][20][21][22][23][24] Yet, NaAlO 2 is highly corrosive and hygroscopic, which makes it difficult to use industrially. In the laboratory, the operator can notice this by the fact that glass wares are corroded when in contact with pure NaAlO 2difficult to clean after use.…”
