Abstract:We present a numerical method of determining the wavelength of dendritic sidebranches accompanying the needle crystal. Our method uses a linearization of the equations of interface evolution about the exact steady-state solution. We show that although the steady state is linearly stable, small perturbations will be selectively amplified, giving rise to observable branching. The sidebranches are stationary in the laboratory frame of reference and their wavelength scales as the tip radius for physical values of … Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
