Synthesis of boron nitride nanotubes employing mechanothermal process and its characterization

Abstract: Multi-walled boron nitride (BN) nanotubes having cylindrical structure were synthesized employing the mechanothermal process. In this process hexagonal boron nitride powder (hBN) was first ball milled for 50-100 h using a high-energy ball mill and the ball-milled samples were annealed in N 2 atmosphere for about 10 h in the temperature range of 950-1300°C. The BN nanotubes exhibited a well-crystallized hexagonal structure with about 25-40 nm in diameter and up to 1 lm length. These BN nanotubes were well chara… Show more

“…The peak at ∼964 cm −1 , present in all spectra, is from the ν 1 symmetric stretching vibration of phosphate anions in HA . The peak at ∼1367 cm −1 , present in HA-BNNT powder and sintered pellet, is an E 2g mode peak from h-BN (Zhi et al, 2006b;Guo and Singh, 2008;Singhal et al, 2008). The presence of h-BN peak in Raman spectrum of the pellet along with the tubular structures in HRTEM images ( Fig.…”

“…In the first step, successful surface modification of boron nitride powder into nanoparticles (80 nm) by ball-milling is achieved using planetary ball mill [16][17][18]. In the second step, BN nanoparticles are dispersed into deionized water to obtain BN nanofluids.…”
