Synthesis of Artificial Opals with Uniform Mesoporous Silica Spheres

Abstract: The mesoporous silica submicron-spheres (80–200 nm) with a small dispersion in diameter (< 10%) as the building blocks of the artificial mesoporous silica opals have been synthesized using quaternary ammonium surfactant as template in an aqueous solution of suitable polarity at near neutral condition of pH = 7.0–9.0.

“…Although many studies of mesoporous silica nanoparticles have been reported, the hexagonal arrangement of mesopores was disordered in nanoscale particles. Nanoparticles of MCM-41 ranging from 23 to 100 nm in size were prepared by neutralization .…”

“…Rocha and co-workers synthesized benzene-bridged PMOs using C14 to C18 alkyltrimethylammonium bromide as surfactants; the resulting materials exhibited molecular-scale periodicity and pore diameters tunable from 32 to 39 Å. In addition to controlling the pore size of PMOs, surfactants with varying chain length can modify the hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity of the synthesis gel, and therefore, they significantly influence the morphology of the materials.…”

“…For example, Tang et al prepared mono-dispersed MSN though the assembly of those particles were disordered. 23 Yano et al reported the preparation of monodispersed colloidal MSNs with large size through the one-pot method, and fabricated colloidal crystals. 42,119 The diameter of these particles can be easily controlled by tuning the preparative conditions while maintaining their monodispersity.…”
