Synthesis of alkali metal platinates and their dissolution behavior in hydrochloric acid

Abstract: To decrease the environmental load due to current Pt dissolution processes that use strong acids in combination with oxidizing agents, the synthesis and dissolution of alkali metal platinates in hydrochloric acid (HCl) were examined. The alkali metal platinates were prepared by calcinating mixtures of Pt black and the alkali metal carbonates (Li, Na, K) at 600800°C in air. Li 2 PtO 3 powder was obtained through the calcination of a Pt black and Li 2 CO 3 mixture at 600°C. The formation of NaPt 3 O 4 and Na 2 P… Show more

“…According to Kasuya et al's recent research, PGMs such as Pt, Pd and Rh can form complex oxides when mixed and heated with alkali metal salts, and these oxides can be readily dissolved in HCl (2013a, 2013b, 2014a, 2014b, 2015a, 2015b, 2020). The authors also investigated the solubility enhancement of PGMs by using complex oxides and reported on the formation conditions, solubility, and dissolution mechanism of Ir-containing complex oxides (Kobayashi et al 2019; Sanekata et al 2022, 2023).…”

“…Other recent studies including pretreatment, leaching media, and mutual separation processes are summarized in a literature . In order to avoid the use of Cl 2 , we previously reported novel methods for dissolving PGMs via the formation of complex oxides, such as Li 2 PtO 3 , Li 2 PdO 2 , and Li 2 RhO 3 . The most reactive alkali metal salt for forming a complex oxide is Li 2 CO 3 . However, the increasing costs of Li salts in recent years led to further investigation as to whether they can be replaced with less expensive Na salts.…”

“…Previously, to avoid the use and generation of toxic gases, we proposed a novel dissolution process for PGMs based on composite oxides [8][9][10][11][12][13]. This novel process enables the PGMs to be oxidized (ionized) through their calcination with alkali metal salts, thereby avoiding the requirement of highly toxic oxidizing agents in the dissolution process.…”
