Synthesis of Aligned Carbon Nanofibers on Electrochemically Preroughened Silicon

Abstract: Aligned carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with a population density of about 3 × 108 cm−2 are synthesized on electrochemically roughened silicon using the bias-assisted chemical vapor deposition system. Isolated CNFs with much lower population density (∼3 × 106 cm−2) are formed on polished silicon wafer at the same growth conditions. The morphologies, microstructures, and components of the CNFs are accordingly characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and en… Show more

“…[ 44–47 ] Furthermore, the legs of arthropods rendered the nonwetting properties facilitated by the hierarchical nano‐ or micro‐structures providing an air cushion. [ 48–50 ] Hence, the use of wax patterns printed on the porous structures of paper economically optimized to take the most advantage of the surface tension without any surface modification or the use of metal. To fabricate an aquatic insect robot, we followed the morphology of early development, the omega‐shaped (Ω) robot, with four legs and rectangular body made of shape memory alloys or oligomers.…”

“…Then, drops are expelled suddenly from the setae, arising from the elastic deformation of setae array by growing drops (Figure f). Ultimately, condensed drops coalescence at the leg surface leads to a rapid anisotropic motion along the surface (Figure g) . Therefore, the self‐removal behavior of droplets on a very small scale will inspire the design of novel AF surfaces.…”

“…The continuous in situ observation shows that much more as‐coalesced droplets form on apexes of MCS array (Figure S1, Supporting Information). As reported, the surfaces of lotus leaf make the condensed droplets easily to be suspended up on the apex of papillae, due to cooperation between wettability gradient formation and multipapillea via coalescence of microdroplets (e.g., at low temperature and high humidity) . Similarly, water repellency can be seen on strider leg with setas.…”

“…Figure S3 (Supporting Information) shows the sequence images of microdroplet coalescence to apex of single MCS. It is far different from that of normal spine where microdroplets are transported to the bottom (larger diameter) of cone spines . Figure a–c shows the sequent images of coalesced‐droplet transport on apexes on three MCSs with different apex angles of 30° (Figure a), 20° (Figure b), and 10° (Figure c) in the time of ≈18.42, ≈16.58, and ≈11.28 s, respectively.…”
