SYNTHESIS OF ACETIC ACID FROM ETHANOL BY ELECTROOXIDATION TECHNIQUE USING Ni-Cu-PVC ELECTRODE

Abstract: A usage of Ni-Cu-PVC electrode for the oxidation of ethanol by electrochemical technique will be reported in this paper. In this work, the effect of electrodes on the yields of acetic acid was determined. Electrode used was made of the mixtures of Ni powder, Cu powder and of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) with various percentages. Electrooxidation of 0.20 M ethanol in 0.16 M KOH (24 mL) were carried out using chrono coulometry (CC) at a potential of 1050 mV for 6 hours with continious stirring. Electrooxdation resul… Show more

“…Unfortunately, the oxidation mechanism is rather complex and, according to Leger [43], it involves eleven possible (2) the main reactions taking place in the cell, and their potentials (expressed as V vs. the SHE for the half reactions). The reactions are for acidic DMFCs [36], alkaline DMFCs [37,38], acidic DEFCs [36,37,39], alkaline DEFCs [38,40,41]. The molecules are not in scale steps.…”

“…The AgC-PVC electrode was prepared using a mechanical alloying technique (MAT) 22,23 by mixing the powder combination of Ag and C (Table 1) with PVC at a ratio of 95% powder mixture to 5% PVC (wt.%). The total weight of the pellet obtained was approximately 1.5 g. Then, 4 mL of THF was added to the mixture to dissolve the PVC.…”
