Synthesis of a series of polyunsaturated fatty acids, their potencies as essential fatty acids and as precursors of prostaglandins

Obwohl man schon seit langem weiD, daD ungedttigte Fettsauren neben gesittigten Fettsiuren in den meisten Lipiden vorkommen, haben es erst die modernen Analysenmethoden ermoglicht. Fettduremuster qualitativ und quantitativ zu bestimmen. Die heutigen Kenntnisse uber die chemische Struktur, die physikalischen Eigenschaften und den Stoffwechsel ungesattigter Fettsauren bilden die Grundlage fur die Entwicklung neuer Vorstellungen uber ihre Funktion. Danach bestimmen die ungedttigten Fettsiuren wesentlich die Eigenschaften von biologischen Membranen. AuDerdem sind die essentiellen Fettduren Vorstufen fur die Prostaglandine.

Although unsaturated fatty acids have long been known to accompany saturated fatty acids in most lipids, qualitative and quantitative determination of fatty acid patterns only became possible with the advent of modern analytical methods. Present day knowledge of the chemical structure, physical properties, and metabolism of unsaturated fatty acids provides the basis for the development of new concepts of their function. Thus unsaturated fatty acids crucially determine the properties of biological membranes. Moreover, essential fatty acids are precursors of prostaglandins.
