Background Trace amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus can easily trigger eutrophication damage in surface water, while cost-effective adsorption treatment is in prospect for clearing these pollutants simultaneously and efficiently. In this study, engineered adsorbents decorated with ZnFe-LDH by alkaline coprecipitation (3-6 mm, with modified ceramsite as CZF and modified volcanic rock as VZF) were prepared for NH 4 + and H 2 PO 4 - co-adsorption from aqueous solutions.Results Coexisting ions showed great effects on phosphate adsorption, especially Ca 2+ and CO 3 2- , and humic acid exhibited only a limited shielding impact on co-adsorption properties. Though comprehensive tests presented that the maximum captured amount of ammonium and phosphate occurred at pH 7, the isotherm and kinetic results suggest that two adsorbents preferentially adsorbed each pollutant. Specifically, the maximum uptake quantity of NH 4 + (15.55 mg-N g -1 ) and H 2 PO 4 - (11.21 mg-P g -1 ) were achieved by VZF and CZF, respectively, and controlled by physisorption and chemisorption distinctively, revealing that contaminants were cleared in disparate ways. Performances of seven consecutive adsorption/desorption cycles using 5% NaOH regenerant suggested that CZF retained 71.9% of PO 4 - removal efficiency, and VZF retained 47.9% of the NH 4 + adsorption rate, implying the strong reusability of ZnFe-LDH-modified adsorbents. A dynamic study has assessed that with 1 kg of combined modified adsorbents, approximately 527 L of polluted runoff flow could be continuously treated to below the National limits within one adsorption cycle.Conclusion Comparing with other parallel adsorbents, ZnFe-LDH-modified adsorbent is promising in eliminating eutrophication due to their superior capacity, stability, renewability, and non-toxicity.

Carbonization of biomass can prepare carbon materials with excellent properties. In order to explore the comprehensive utilization and recycling of Caragana korshinskii biomass, 15 kinds of Caragana korshinskii biochar (CB) were prepared by controlling the oxygen-limited pyrolysis process. Moreover, we pay attention to the dynamic changes of microstructure of CB and the by-products. The physicochemical properties of CB were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), BET-specific surface area (BET-SSA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), and Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The optimal preparation technology was evaluated by batch adsorption application experiment of NO3−, and the pyrolysis mechanism was explored. The results showed that the pyrolysis temperature is the most important factor in the properties of CB. With the increase of temperature, the content of C, pH, mesoporous structure, BET-SSA of CB increased, the cation exchange capacity (CEC) decreased and then increased, but the yield and the content of O and N decreased. The CEC, pH, and BET-SSA of CB under each pyrolysis process were 16.64–81.4 cmol·kg−1, 6.65–8.99, and 13.52–133.49 m2·g−1, respectively. CB contains abundant functional groups and mesoporous structure. As the pyrolysis temperature and time increases, the bond valence structure of C 1s, Ca 2p, and O 1s is more stable, and the phase structure of CaCO3 is more obvious, where the aromaticity increases, and the polarity decreases. The CB prepared at 650 °C for 3 h presented the best adsorption performance, and the maximum theoretical adsorption capacity for NO3− reached 120.65 mg·g−1. The Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order model can well describe the isothermal and kinetics adsorption process of NO3−, respectively. Compared with other cellulose and lignin-based biomass materials, CB showed efficient adsorption performance of NO3− without complicated modification condition. The by-products contain bio-soil and tail gas, which are potential source of liquid fuel and chemical raw materials. Especially, the bio-oil of CB contains α-d-glucopyranose, which can be used in medical tests and medicines.

In this study, date-palm biochar MgAl-augmented double-layered hydroxide (biochar–MgAl–LDH) nanocomposite was synthesized, characterized, and used for enhancing the removal of phosphate and nitrate pollutants from wastewater. The biochar–MgAl–LDH had higher selectivity and adsorption affinity towards phosphate compared to nitrate. The adsorption kinetics of both anions were better explained by the pseudo-first-order model with a faster removal rate to attain equilibrium in a shorter time, especially at lower initial phosphate-nitrate concentration. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacities of phosphate and nitrate by the non-linear Langmuir model were 177.97 mg/g and 28.06 mg/g, respectively. The coexistence of anions (Cl−, SO42−, NO3−, CO32− and HCO3−) negligibly affected the removal of phosphate due to its stronger bond on the nano-composites, while the presence of Cl− and PO43− reduced the nitrate removal attributed to the ions’ participation in the active adsorption sites on the surface of biochar–MgAl–LDH. The excellent adsorptive performance is the main synergetic influence of the MgAl–LDH incorporation into the biochar. The regeneration tests confirmed that the biochar–MgAl composite can be restored effortlessly and has the prospective to be reused after several subsequent adsorption-desorption cycles. The biochar-LDH further demonstrated capabilities for higher removal of phosphate and nitrate from real wastewater.
